What are the penalties for driving under the influence in Belgium?
- Driving ban : a minimum of 8 days, up to several years in the case of a repeat offense.
- Amende : starting at 1,600 euros (after additional surcharges), up to 16,000 euros.
- Suspension of the right to drive : Requirement to pass medical, psychological, written, and practical exams in order to regain one's driver's license.
- Ignition interlock (breathalyzer ignition interlock) : required for levels exceeding 1.2 mg/L AAG or in the event of a recurrence.
- Immediate suspension of the license : The police may immediately suspend your license for up to 15 days if your blood alcohol level exceeds 0.88 mg/L.
