The legal boundaries in Belgium
For regular drivers, less than 0.22 mg/l in exhaled air (or 0.5 promille in blood) is permissible. Between 0.22 and 0.35 mg/l is alcohol intoxication. More than 0.35 mg/l is intoxication. Stricter standards apply to professional drivers.
What changes with the new category of directors?
A stricter limit of 0.09 mg/l of exhaled alveolar air (0.2 promille) applies to professional drivers. That limit does not apply to novice drivers: they are subject to the ordinary limit of 0.22 mg/l, but face a stricter regime when it comes to reinstatement examinations.
