Driving without a valid licence is a criminal offence that is handled in police court. The penalties can be severe, especially for repeat offenders or if you are driving while a driving ban is in effect.
Situations of driving without a licence
The law distinguishes several situations: driving without ever having obtained a licence, driving with an expired or invalid licence, driving with a foreign licence that is not valid in Belgium, and driving while a driving ban is in effect (the most serious case).

The punishment varies depending on the situation: a fine, a driving ban and, in serious cases, imprisonment. Driving while banned from driving is punished more severely than driving without ever obtaining a licence.
