Work accident and occupational disease in Belgium: your rights and compensation
An occupational accident or illness has serious consequences for your health and income. In Belgium, as an employee, you are entitled to compensation through your employer or his work accident insurer, but also through the Fedris (Federal Agency for Occupational Risks).
What is a workplace accident?
A workplace accident is a sudden event at work or on the way to and from work that causes a physical injury. The employer is required to have a work accident insurance company to compensate for the injury.
Compensation in the event of a work-related accident
The work accident insurer will reimburse medical expenses, temporary disability and permanent disability. If you disagree with the compensation offered or the insurer disputes liability, you can take legal action in labour court.
Occupational disease
An occupational disease is an illness resulting from exposure to harmful agents at work. Fedris, the Federal Agency for Occupational Risks, recognises occupational diseases and awards compensation. If the recognition is disputed, you can file an appeal.
